MAVERICK SPOTLIGHT: MEET THE AQUADOLLS

Introducing the badass Aquadolls! We had a chat with the glittering members of this incredible group and got to know a little more about these punk rock performers.

What has been your earliest musical memory?

My earliest music memory is sitting in the little seat of a grocery cart while my parents would go shopping. I would sing to all of the strangers passing by as I whisked along them in the comfort of the shopping cart. My favourite song when I was four was "Loving You" by Minnie Riperton, and I would love to impress random strangers at the grocery store with my whistle tones. One woman I sang to at a shoe store told my mom, "Have you considered putting her in music lessons or theatre?" Shortly after that, I was in church choir, ballet, tap, and doing acting classes all before the age of seven. I was really lucky to have my family support my creativity at such a young age.

"Never EVER let someone

compromise your artistic vision"

Who would you say were your biggest music influences growing up?

I grew up on oldies and pop music of the early 2000s, so my taste is sort of all over the place! Some of my old school favourites are The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, The Runaways, and No Doubt in the 90s/early 2000s. As far as more modern pop music, I owe it to Britney Spears, Aqua, Christina Aguilera, and Avril Lavigne because they definitely helped shape me to be the artist I am today. A fine mix of classic songwriting style with fearlessness from these artists is what made me, me!

What is the greatest lesson the music industry has taught you so far?

Never EVER let someone compromise your artistic vision, no matter what promises they give. Always follow your gut.

What inspires the sound you create?

I'm inspired by whatever mood I am in when coming up with a certain song idea. I feel like especially when writing for the latest album (The Dream and The Deception) a lot of the songs have a different energy of sound to them. The first half of the album, or the dream segment, is more upbeat with happy, pop-like undertones with dark lyrics, implying a good dream that shifts into a nightmare, representing the black portion of the album cover. The second half of the album, or the deception portion, is rather dark in a sense of the mood shifting to more angry and rebellious, which represents the red half of the cover. It really just depends on what each song is meant to portray.

Are you working on any new music and if so what can we expect from it?

Right now I'm in the middle of remastering "The Dream and The Deception" for CDs and vinyl for the record label we started, Aqua Babe Records. There will be a new bonus track, plus a remix of "Euphoria". In between finishing that up, I've been recording some solo material for quite some time and hope to release something this spring, which is more club/EDM/trap inspired. As for The Aquadolls, I have tons of new ideas for songs, and everyone else in the band wants to also start writing together and collaborating on recording, which we hope to do very soon! Expect so much music, you'll get sick of us.

Whose DM'S would you slide into for a future collab?

It would be an absolute dream to work with Charli XCX, Grimes, SOPHIE, or Nedarb on a track!

What are your future goals?

My goal is to make as much art as possible and share it with the world as often as I can. I want to make lots of music videos, travel the world playing shows, and most importantly, meet the people who support the music I get to make.

If you could give one piece of advice for people getting into the industry what would it be?

Be yourself! Don't change that for anyone. Be unapologetically you. Play as many shows as possible. Make friends with other bands and artists in your local scene and gig up together, and don't be afraid to reach out to others outside of your local scene! Write as much as you can, record what you like, share it with the world, and soon people will love it. Don't give up! Fight for your art, and have a ton of fun while doing it!
